Winter News 2007
Loads of fun!
Easter Camp was a riot! We had students here from Germany, Korea, and Spain. Dili and Siân took them go-carting, rambling round the mountains, swimming, orienteering, sight-seeing. Some of them were even brave enough to go down the huge drop slide in Geronimo's (Which is about 7 metres high)! They seemed to have private parties every night but still tried to work hard in the mornings. They were a great bunch and we miss them a whole lot.
Germans in Rhyl
We will be welcoming a group of 50 German students from Neuenburg and Müllheim to Rhyl for a week in April. In addition to English lessons they will have plenty of fun and interesting activities like visiting the Crown Courts in Chester, spending a day in Snowdonia, having a disco night, etc. We are very much looking forward to having them here.
>>> New <<< Foreign Language Evening Classes
Lingualink customers now have the opportunity to learn foreign languages in group settings. Spanish and French beginner's classes started on January 17, the other classes will commence soon.
Invest into your own personal development by learning a new skill, enhance your existing language skills, chat with fellow language students and natives, or simply enjoy the evening and meet people with similar interests. Whatever your reason for joining - you'll see it's worth it!
What a Summer!
Wow, this summer just flew by! It was wonderful and full of activities: Laserquest
in Chester, orienteering in Beddgelert, games and fun on the beach in Rhyl, walks to beautiful
places like Aber Falls, runs around Lake Brenig, a super Talent Night, a banquet evening,
fun English lessons, and lots of tears when it came to saying good-bye.
We had a blast and we miss you very much. Hope to see you all next summer!
Our director turns 60! - Can you believe it?
Unbelievable, and yet true: John Hymus turned 60 just a few days ago, and the mystery of his beauty is still not solved.
He keeps going around singing "Why am I so beautiful?...". If anyone has any ideas make sure you let us know! The person with the most original idea wins a Welsh flag. (We're serious - email us by the end of August!)
Meet Sam and Paddy
This is Sam, the Labrador, now 14 years old. Although he's getting very old, he's still gorgeous (kind of like John). A bit fat, sometimes, but definitely good looking. Sam likes food. When he's not eating food, he's thinking of it. When he's not thinking of it, he's dreaming about it. He lives for food, talks about food, walks for food, might even kill for food... (No way, we all know that Sam is gentle as a lamb!). When he was a puppy he dreamed of getting a doctorate in Food Technology. He has but two modes of operation: One is hungry, the other one is very, very, very hungry.
And this is Paddy, the parrot. Well actually, his full name is Patrick. Because his colours are green, white, and orange just like the ones in the Irish flag! But his friends just call him Paddy. He's two years old and he was raised "by hand" from an egg. Paddy just loves figs. He'll do anything for a fig. Even behave and stop biting for a while. Also, he enjoys destroying things like soap boxes, his cage, or cables. He does like those cables. Several of our appliances have failed because Paddy had chewed through the wires! And he's a great fan of noise. Really talented, too. He's excellent at imitating the telephone. So whenever he feels lonely or bored (which is quite often, actually) he just imitates the phone and hopes someone will come and answer it. And he's managed to fool us on several occasions!
You can read more about the adventures of Paddy and Sam in our news page in the future so do keep coming back!
Summer Camps in full blast!
Summer Camps have started and Rhyl has become really busy. We have kids from Germany, Switzerland, Japan, Spain, and Vietnam staying here. And, of course, we have lots of intense studying, adventurous outings, exciting activities and plenty of fun going on.
Neighbours - everybody needs good neighbours
A 12-year-old language student (male) was looking out of his upstairs bedroom window with binoculars at the seagulls. A neighbour who was exercising in her pyjamas in her room on an exercise bike thought he was peering at her! Oh dear!
Here's a joke for ya'
A beautiful blonde goes up to a friend and says: "You know, everybody thinks that blondes are stupid. But in reality, we're quite intelligent." Her friend, wanting to be polite, replies: "Oh, yes! I'm sure you are." "No, really", replies the blonde. "I can tell you the capital of every single state in the USA. Test me. Any Capital." Now the friend is intrigued. "Alright", he says, "Then what's the capital of Wisconsin?" "Oh, that's easy", replies the blonde emphatically. "It's W!"
Fact of the month
Did you know...
...that bilingual people are less likely to suffer
from mental deterioration and Altzheimer's disease in old age? A survey carried
out by York University in Toronto has found that being fluent in multiple
languages improves performance among all age groups, but the difference is
significantly greater at an older age.
So carry on learning those
languages!
